Phytos (Phytonutrients) Strengthen Our Immune System
Phytos (from the Greek "phyton" meaning plant) simply means nutrients from plants.
Phytonutrients are a class of health-promoting, bio-active compounds with many sub-categories. "Phytos" are naturally occurring compounds that contribute to the flavor, color and disease resistance of plants.
Most known phytonutrients are strongly related to pigment. Dark red and blue pigmented flavonoids, with names like isoflavones, anthocyanins, flavinols, catechins and phenols are dominant in fruits.
Why is this so important? Well, one of the biggest reasons is.......
Phytonutrients are
powerful antioxidants.
It's these power-packed nutrients that give fruits
and vegetables their many
dark colors.
Consuming a variety of phytonutrients with a full spectrum of colors and pigments provides many health benefits.
Perhaps most important to know about phytonutrients and fruits is that they appear to be far more beneficial and effective in promoting health when a combination of fruits (not just a single fruit) is consumed.
Why?....because....
Plants make their own disease-fighting chemicals we call phytochemicals, phytos for short.
The same phytos that help keep plants healthy also keep our bodies healthy.
These phytos provide Mother Nature's "medicine" for cell health.
It's these phytonutrients that help protect our body and fight disease.
How?....
They help our cells repair themselves by stimulating
the release of protective
digestive enzymes
that rebuild damaged cells.
For example: Phytos (phytonutrient chemicals) fight cancer.
Cancer starts with a cell out of control.
Like a band of terrorists, these out-of-control cancer cells try to infiltrate other organs through the body's blood vessels.
Then, through a process called metastasis, these cells spread throughout the body looking for a place to settle.
That's why......
....Phytos also help hearts.
Antioxidant phytos can interfere with the damaging effects of LDL (or bad cholesterol) on arteries.
When artery walls are damaged by
free radicals,
it's easier for oxidized LDLs to build up.
Antioxidant phytos, especially beta carotene, block this process and thus resist cardiovascular disease. This is one of the BIGGEST reasons why
eating superfoods
is so very important!
Even though there are antioxidant phytos in all plant foods, those found in fruits and vegetables seem to be the most powerful. (See the
beneftis of high ORAC antioxidants.)
One reason is flavonoids, which are the largest group of several thousand compounds belonging to the antioxidant-rich polyphenol family (also called phytochemicals).
Berries such as the
Acai Berry,
blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries are superfoods with bioflavonoids that contain some of the highest levels of antioxidants known to man.
However,
healthy dark chocolate
(especially when it's
combined with bioflavonoids)
has the highest antioxidant levels available -- not to mention, it's chocolate!
(Watch -- "I Love Chocolate!")
These natural fruits along with other fruits and vegetables are low in calories and high in beneficial fiber. Plus, many are also rich in vitamins and minerals.
Phytonutrients have been demonstrated to provide
these health benefits:
* facilitates death of radical oxidized cells
* enhances cell-to-cell synergy
* repairs DNA damage
* detoxifies certain carcinogens
* performs antioxidant duties
* enhances immune responses
* helps prevent cardiovascular disease
* helps prevent osteoporosis
* helps prevent macular degeneration and cataracts
The best way to receive enough "phytos" is through juicing. But, if you don't have time to "juice" for yourself, then
