A Balanced pH Promotes Better Health
A balanced pH diet is one that emphasizes, to varying degrees,
fresh fruit, vegetables, roots, nuts, and legumes --
or living superfoods.
As mentioned earlier, our ancestors consumed a diet very different from what's typical today. As the consumption
of fresh fruits and vegetables decrease, our
SAD
diet becomes more and more acid-producing.
Almost all foods that we eat, after being digested,
absorbed, and metabolized, release either an acid or
an alkaline base (bicarbonate) into our blood.
The American diet has shifted to an acid- producing menu....
....(such as grains, fish, meat, poultry, shellfish, cheese, milk, and salt)....
....which promotes of a number of chronic diseases -- (according to some alternative practitioners).
These practitioners are hailing a balanced pH diet...
...(mainly through
a balanced pH
that includes fruits and vegetables) as the best way...
...to regulate body health and fight inflammatory and degenerative diseases.
Since our blood is slightly alkaline, (a pH level of between
7.35 and 7.45), the theory behind the alkaline diet is that
our diet should reflect the body's ideal pH level.
The body tries to maintain a balance of acidic and alkaline substances in order to maintain equilibrium.
If the body falls below this neutral level, it is called
acidosis
Proponents of alkaline diets believe that a diet high in acid-producing foods disrupts this pH balance and promotes the loss of essential minerals.
This imbalance is thought to make people prone to illness.
Because of this, alkaline-based foods are needed to offset the acidic balance so that our bodily systems work harmoniously and do not become over-stressed.
Most of us know when we have too much acid in our system from foods like tomato sauce or caffeine products, which can result in an
upset stomach
or indigestion. The condiments highest in acidic values include mustard, soy
sauce, vinegar, and white sugar.
Among the highest alkaline vegetables are wheat grass and barley grass, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli sprouts, and parsley. An alkaline diet may be just what some people are looking for,
especially if they don?t feel well in general or believe their nutritional health could be better.
But it is still important for each person considering this type of diet to check with their doctor in order to ensure it will not compromise their individual health or well being.
